What Causes Blocked Drains?

Most internal blockages are caused by a few familiar culprits. Kitchen sinks block from a build-up of cooking fat, grease, food scraps and starch in the trap and waste pipe. Bathroom drains block from soap scum, hair, toothpaste and bath products combining into a stubborn paste. Toilets block from too much paper, wet wipes (which never break down properly even when labelled 'flushable') and sanitary items.

Outside drains block from a wider range of culprits — leaves washed in by autumn rain, tree roots growing into damaged sections of pipe, collapsed sections of older clay drainage and the gradual build-up of grease and silt over decades of use.

How We Clear Blocks

We carry the full range of drain-clearing equipment on the van. Internal blockages are usually cleared with a combination of plunging, hand augers ('snakes') and chemical solvents where appropriate. Most kitchen sink blocks are sorted in under an hour.

Outside drains and main runs are cleared with electric drain rods and high-pressure jetters. The jetter pushes a thin hose down the drain with a back-spraying nozzle that scours the pipe walls clean — far more effective than rods alone, and the only way to fully clean a long run.

Where rods or jetting cannot clear the block, we have access to a CCTV drain camera that lets us see exactly what is going on and exactly where the problem is. This is particularly useful for tree-root intrusion, collapsed pipes and stubborn blockages where the cause is not obvious.

Some properties have drains that block again and again. The cause is usually structural — a section of pipe that has dropped, cracked or collapsed, or where roots are repeatedly growing in. Repeated clearing of these is throwing money at a problem that needs a permanent fix.

We can carry out drain repairs by lifting and replacing damaged sections, or in some cases by using a no-dig trenchless lining technique that pulls a new resin lining through the existing pipe.
