Carpentry and Joinery Services in Essex

Good carpentry is the difference between a job that looks fine on day one and one that still looks fine in ten years. Handyman James has decades of carpentry and joinery experience covering every part of the trade you might want in a domestic Essex setting — first fix, second fix, fitted furniture, repairs, decking, fencing and bespoke pieces. We bring our own workshop tools to site and most jobs are completed without your home becoming a building site.

Carpenter cutting timber for a joinery project in Essex

First-Fix Carpentry

First-fix carpentry is the structural timber work that goes in before plastering — joists, studwork, noggins, door linings, window boards, loft hatches and roof timbers. It needs to be true, level and properly fixed because everything that follows hangs off it.

Common first-fix jobs include forming new stud partitions to divide a room, opening up a doorway in an internal wall, sistering rotten or sagging floor joists, lifting a section of floor for a plumber or electrician and putting it back tidy, building loft floors so the space is useable for storage, fitting roof window kerbs, and putting in proper noggins for fixing TV brackets, kitchen units and bathroom fittings.

Second-Fix Carpentry

Second fix is the visible carpentry — the bits everyone sees. Skirtings, architraves, doors and ironmongery, dado and picture rails, window boards, stair spindles and handrails, and so on. Mitres need to be tight, scribes need to be neat, and the fixings need to be hidden. We pin and glue rather than over-rely on no-more-nails, sand the joints, and always paint or stain the cut ends.

Hanging a door looks easy and rarely is. The frame has to be plumb, the door has to be correctly sized for clearance top and bottom, the hinges have to sit in flush rebates, and the latch and strike plate have to align. We hang internal doors, external doors, fire-rated doors, French doors and bi-folds, with all the right ironmongery and intumescent strips where required.

Fitted Furniture

Fitted furniture transforms awkward Essex bedrooms and alcoves. We build alcove cupboards either side of chimney breasts, fitted wardrobes from floor to ceiling, under-stairs storage, window seats with lift-up lids, and bespoke desks and home-office units to suit the space available. Carcasses are usually MDF, with painted or veneered fronts depending on what you would like the finished piece to look like.

Because the work is built to fit the room rather than the other way round, you make use of every spare inch — tapered alcoves, sloping ceilings, awkward returns and chimney breasts all become useful storage rather than dead space.

Decking, Pergolas and Garden Carpentry

Outside, we build decking, pergolas, planters, garden gates, summer house bases, and small outbuildings. Pressure-treated softwood is the workhorse, but we are equally happy with hardwood, composite or a mix. All deck frames are properly braced and protected against rot, and ground-contact timbers are sat on appropriate bearers.

If your existing deck has gone soft underfoot, has become slippery, or has spindles and rails that flex when leant on, we can usually rebuild it economically rather than starting from scratch.

Repairs and Replacements

Old doors that drop, windows that have rotted at the cill, stairs that creak, floorboards that have lifted, bay window fronts where the timber has gone past saving — all are everyday work for us. Where a piece can be repaired we repair it; where it cannot, we make and fit a sympathetic replacement.
