Driveways and Paving in Essex

A new or restored driveway transforms the front of any Essex home. It also adds practical value — somewhere clean and level to park, kerb appeal for resale, and an end to the slow ankle-twisting deterioration of the old surface. Block Paving

Block paving is the most popular driveway choice in Essex by a long way, and for good reason. It looks smart, can be laid in any pattern, comes in a huge range of colours and textures, and individual blocks can be lifted and re-laid if anything ever goes wrong.

We dig out to a proper depth, install a Type 1 sub-base, lay a sand bed, set the blocks, cut neat returns, sweep in kiln-dried sand and finish with a properly compacted edge. The edges are crucial — without proper concrete haunching, blocks creep over time and the whole driveway shifts. We never skip this step.

Drainage is also handled correctly. Under current planning rules, new driveways above a certain area must drain to a permeable surface or to your own land — they cannot run rainwater into the public road. We install ACO channels, soakaways or permeable jointing as required.

Resin-Bound Driveways

Resin-bound driveways have grown enormously in popularity. The surface is a smooth, jointless finish made by mixing decorative aggregate with a clear UV-stable resin and trowelling it onto a properly prepared base — usually concrete or tarmac. The result is fully porous, weed-free, easy to maintain and available in a huge range of colours.

Resin is more expensive per square metre than block paving, but it lasts well, looks superb and the lack of joints means weeds and moss never take hold. We install resin-bound driveways across Essex on suitable existing bases, or we can lay a fresh base as part of the project.

Tarmac and Concrete

Traditional tarmac and printed concrete are still the right choice for many properties, particularly long farm drives, larger commercial yards and rural Essex properties. We lay both, with the same attention to base preparation, drainage and edges as our block paving work.

Printed concrete in particular is enjoying something of a comeback as it gives the look of paving at a lower price than full block paving, and lasts for decades when properly sealed.

Repairs and Restoration

Many existing driveways do not need replacing — they need cleaning, re-sanding, re-pointing or repairing. We pressure wash dirty block paving and brush in fresh kiln-dried sand. We replace broken blocks individually rather than relaying entire areas. We patch sunken sections caused by settlement. We re-cut tarmac edges that have crumbled, and we seal porous concrete to extend its life.

Where a small section has failed but most of the driveway is sound, restoration is far better value than replacement.
